30 Foods that Start with D from Across the Globe

Welcome to JarKitchen.com, here we have yet another post in our Foodcyclopedia. In this post, we are going to talk about foods that start with D. I have enjoyed crafting this list a lot, just like our other lists in the category. Finding foods that start with the letter D is not so hard, given that there are many words already starting with D. I’ve had a hard time with the X list. Anyway, I have done my best to keep it interesting.

Let us get straight into it, shall we?

1. Date

The first item on our list of foods that start with D is the Date fruit. Date is a sweet fruit that is originally grown in the Middle East. It has a long seed and a mild texture. It takes part in Islamic Culture. Every year during Ramadan Fest, people fast. After the fasting period ends every night, the Date is usually the first food they eat. It is rich in fibers, magnesium, and manganese. It has been cultivated in the region for about 5000 years. Ancient Egyptians used to make Date wine from this fruit. Then as time passed by, in Ancient Rome, Date was the symbol of victory.

2. Donut or Doughnut

Who does not love Donuts? It is very popular in the American tv series and also one of the foods that start with D. You can see the policemen grabbing a doughnut on their way to the crime scene. This dessert is very high in sugar and contains mostly carbohydrates. What makes a doughnut special is mostly the dough. It is a very soft sweet dough that will literally melt in your mouth as you drink your strong black coffee with it.

When I was in Germany for an internship, a chocolate doughnut was the best option for me on my way to work. There are of course other versions of doughnuts where the dough can be crispier but the original doughnut should be soft. Above the doughnut, there is usually a topping made from chocolate or a strawberry sauce. The dough however resembles that of the Berliner’s. What is special about the Berliner is, that it has a strawberry jam in the middle, but is made from a dough-like doughnut’s. The top of the Berliner is then garnished with icing sugar.

3. Dill

The third item on our list of foods that start with D is Dill. Dill is a type of plant that is often used as a seasoning. It actually originated in Asia. If its leaves and seeds are dried and then ground, you get the seasoning. It is also used in many salads and pastries. For example, If you come to Turkey and want to eat some Poğaça (pronounced: Poacha), which is a kind of a pastry, we strongly recommend that you eat some Dill Poğaça. It makes the color of the Poğaça greener than it is and really increases the taste.

In European cuisine, people use Dill as a topping for boiled potatoes, of course, covered with fresh butter.

Another interesting use of Dill lies in Russia. Dill has antiflatulent properties. What is antiflatulent you ask? It means that dill helps with the prevention of excessive intestinal gas. Russian cosmonauts eat dill in space because of the confined quarters and closed air supply.

In Polish cuisine, fresh dill leaves are mixed with sour cream to be served as a dressing. This dressing can then be mixed with freshly cut cucumbers. Delicious and juicy cucumbers are then mixed with this sauce, forming a salad named Mizeria.

4. Dolma

Meat stuffed gourds, Dolma is one of the foods that start with D

Ahh, Dolma… My mom makes the best Dolma in the world! Being one of the foods that start with D, Dolma is a Turkish specialty. There are many kinds of Dolma made with different vegetables. Dolma means stuffing in Turkish so you might also assume, that there are many types of Dolma. Let us talk about some of them.

Sarma is a kind of dolma that is made with rice, currant, olive oil, and spices. The stuffing contains the ingredients mentioned in the last sentence. After the stuffing is ready, you can lay some grapevine leaves on the table which are usually stored in salty water. Leaves are rolled with the stuffing inside and put nicely into a pot. After that you lay lemon slices above the pot, pour water and olive oil in, and let simmer. After that, the sarmas are ready to be served.

Another type of dolma is the Bell Pepper Dolma. Top of the bell peppers are sliced and the mix is stuffed within the bell pepper. The top of the bell pepper act as a natural lid for the dolma and the way they are cooked is similar to that of the Sarma’s. After cooking, be sure to serve it with Turkish yogurt. The combination works best if the yogurt is a bit sour. With almost the same stuffing, you can make Gourd Dolma. The inside part of the gourd needs to be however carved out first so there is enough room for you to put the stuffing in. Keep reading to find more foods that start with D!

5. Dip

Who does not love to dip? Dips are also one of the foods beginning with the letter D. You are sitting with your friends, watching Netflix, or having a drink together eating chips of course! The best part for me about the chips is the dipping part. There are three dipping characters in the world and they are as follows:

  • Soft Dippers: People who dip their chips just a little. They want to get the flavor of the chips more and garnish the taste by adding the aroma of the dip.
  • Medium Dippers: These people are ordinary people like most of us. They dip just fine to balance the taste of the chip and the dip.
  • Hard Dippers: People who cover their chip almost entirely with the sauce. These people live up to the extreme mostly with their food. They prefer the aroma of the dip over the taste of the chip.

If you are wondering what kind of a dipper I am, I am a soft dipper 🙂 Also with the fries!

Dips are mixtures of sauces and liquids so you enjoy your food better. Salsa and nacho dips are the most famous dips that go along well with chips. For fries though, one of the most famous dips is the ranch dip. Ranch sauce is also one of my favorites. Dip is one of my favorite foods that start with D.

6. Desserts

Being one of the foods that start with D, desserts are sweet foods that people like to eat after their main meal. For example, after supper, an apple pie is a perfect dessert. It is going to make you sleepy and you will enjoy the mixtures of apple and cinnamon aromas. My favorite desserts are:

Apple Pie: Apple Pie is one of my favorites in the world. Oh boy do I love cinnamon! Apple Pie is one of the most famous pies in the world. The main factors in an apple pie are the dough and of course, the quality of the apple used. Sometimes it is topped with cream or ice cream or it is even served with cheddar cheese.

The history of the apple pie goes back to medieval times. In Holland, apple pie is first documented in a cookbook. In this old recipe, the apples were first cooked one time, then peeled off. The apples are then to be mixed with a wooden spoon and put in the pastry. The apples can be seasoned with ginger, cinnamon, small coconut, cloves, and icing sugar. After that, the apples are mixed with cream inside the pastry to be cooked in the oven once again.

7. Decaf Coffee

Decaf is the short version of decaffeinated. When people go up to a coffee place or a roastery, they ask for a tall decaf and they get a tall-size decaffeinated black coffee. That is why Decaf is in our list of foods that start with D. Some of us prefer regular coffee with caffeine content. But some of us may prefer decaffeinated coffee, because of health issues, or because we do not want to receive stimulants in our body. Caffeine stimulates our body and causes an increased temporary sense of wakefulness and therefore you become more alert.

For example, most people get sleepy after they eat lunch, dinner, or breakfast. The best way to mitigate this sleepiness is to drink an espresso or drink a beverage with high caffeine content. This will balance the sleepiness caused by having a meal. here is also one more possible use of coffee. If you would translate it to English it would mean “breakofee”.

Power Napping with Coffee

If you want to power-nap during the day, which is an amazing way to get some rest during a busy day, that involves 10-25 minutes of sleep. So, if you would like to do a power-nap, you should drink an espresso before doing so. Caffeine gets absorbed after 20-25 minutes into the body, which means that you will be much more awake when you wake up from your power-nap.

Decaffeinated Coffee is preferred mostly by people who, as mentioned above, have health issues. Caffeine may cause uncomfortable symptoms in their body, preventing them from sleeping. Also, it is recommended that pregnant women should not drink coffee for the health of their unborn children.

As you may have guessed, some of the foods that start with D, cannot be taken lightly…

8. Daiquiri

A cocktail glass filled with grapefruit Daiquiri, glancing red like blood

Daiquiri is one of the most famous cocktails in the world and also one of the foods that start with D. It is also a family of cocktails, whose basic ingredients include rum, citrus juices, and sweetener or sugar. Citrus juice is mostly lime juice but there are variations of Daiquiri where Bartenders use orange juice as well. Daiquiri is also one of the basic six drinks in the book “The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks“, written by David Ebury.

We have mentioned this book before in the Conclusion section of our list: foods that start with X. I just really love the way fruits from the citrus family like oranges, lime, or lemon are mixed with drinks like tequila or rum. They are real taste enhancers.

Who does not love chocolate right? Some people prefer dark chocolate over milk chocolate and of course, they have their reasons. Dark Chocolate is the 10th food on our list of foods that start with D. You might be wondering how dark chocolate is made. The difference lies in the making of them. Milk chocolate contains a high amount of milk, where dark chocolate does not. Some people with lactose intolerance prefer eating Dark Chocolate because when they eat lactose-containing foods like Dairy products, for example, they go through bloating and create abnormal amounts of intestinal gas.

If you ask me, I prefer milk chocolate. I like how sweet the combination of milk and chocolate is. It is also called Bitter Chocolate because, without milk, the chocolate tastes bitter when compared to milk chocolate.

If you would like to drink something while eating Dark Chocolate, one of the best options is Turkish coffee. Turkish coffee is usually consumed along with something sweet like dark chocolate or Turkish delights.
